Those are lovely! You sort of forget Joanna had a very good modelling career for years.

Joanna is actually naturally blonde, but she is known for hating her hair, so she's forever cutting, dying, and restyling it in hopes that she can make it look good. Part of the reason she cut it off for Purdey was that she thought it would get all frizzy from jumping around doing stunts, because it's "really quite tatty." I read once that she said she longed to be "short, 5'1", with shiny brown hair." And she had it brown pre-TNA, which is why in early episodes it's a darker blonde, since they had to cut and streak it, and let it lighten gradually.

I don't understand why she doens't like her hair, I think it's great! But then again, nobody really likes their own hair ever.
I just love the pictures, they're so colourful, and so 60's (surprise surprise ) I don't really know why, it's hard to explain, but I really have a thing for the 60's

Oh, she really doesn't like it. That's why she seems to have a new hairdo every two secons when you look back over her career. Perms. Short cuts. Dyes. The works. It's an ongoing battle--Joanna vs. her hair.

They'e terribly colourful, aren't they? Everyone loves the sixties, probably for that reason.

Why on earth wouldn't she like her hair? It look pretty good to me.. As you get older hair often becomes thinner and thinner, and she's lucky that it didn't happen to her - you can do a lot of nice hairdo's with hair like that.. Dying your hair makes it very dry unfortunately - and yes, that's experience.. (I've been dying my hair for nearly two years now, and it keeps getting more blonde haha)

The perfect example of her constant changing her hairstyle is Sensitive Skin: it looks different each episode. In the first few episodbrown colour really es of series 1 it's quite short and dark blonde, but through the whole series it becomes longer, lighter and straighter.. I do like her sixties hairdo too though, the suits her.

Yes thinks it's "tatty" apparently. And she's hated since her twenties, probably even longer. She'd probably be quite happy to know you think it looks good, but would probably say something along the lines of it being the cut or styling or something. She used to chew it off when she was young, you know. It was her sort of nervous habit, instead of biting your nails or something. She said it was easy if you had "healthy shining hair like Diana Rigg" when she got Purdey, but hers would get all frizzy when she ran around.

Joanna always claims she's trying desperately to smile in that picture, and yet can never manage it. She said she had problems smiling at that point, as though she didn't know how. I'm not quite sure how that works, but that's what I've read!

Smiling or not, she looks gorgeous!

I'm always slightly confused when it comes to her natural colour. The dark hair suits her, but it seems unnatural to me - the dark blonde hair she has in TNA only a couple of years later is her own, probably? It used to be my colour too - those don't come from packages...

She's naturally light blonde in colour. Her hair was brown when she auditioned for TNA, but when she got it cut she also streaked it blonde (they said it would fall out, probably remembering poor Linda Thorson. It didn't). If you watch the show in production order, her hair is a darker blonde in Eagle's Nest/House of Cards, etc., and gradually lightens to her natural colour as time goes on. I suspect they wanted to do it gradually. But her hair is most certainly darker at the beginning.

I noticed her hair is certainly darker in the beginning of the first series, but I wasn't sure whether that was her natural, or the colour it was later on. She's both brown and blonde suit her though, it's rare! (although I do think it was a good choice to go for a slightly lighter colour later on)

I find when people dye their hair brown it never works as well as other colours--it tends to be too flat looking with too few highlights. But Joanna looks pretty good as a brunette (she's been every colour under the sun, but she claims people talk sweetly to her as a blonde, and more intelligently when she's a brunette!). She's dying it all the time, though, so I suspect when she's darker she lightens it gradually (doesn't it hurt your hair to go from dark to light too fast or something? I've never dyed my hair so I don't know).

But I prefer the lighter hair, it suits her better.
But like Maartje said, she can get away with both blonde and brown hair, which is quite rare, because most people only suit one colour or the other.
I can't imagine what I would look like as a blonde, would probably look awful

I can imagine. Even though it's only meant as a joke, people will tell you 'you can't help it because you're blonde' on daily basis whenever you do something stupid.

It does, actually. It hurts everytime you dye it, but you get used to it. Naturally, I'm a dark blonde (it's comparable to the last Purdey picture) and now I'm a light blonde. (let's say Patsy's colour in series 4, you'll know what I mean) I hate my natural hair colour, so I won't go back to that ever again, haha.

I know I'd look horrible as a blonde. People who are naturally brunettes tend to, I find. But Joanna looks pretty good both ways. Anyway, if dying it is high maintenance, I imagine Joanna would want to keep her natural colour in the series, if only to keep things easy and for continuity purposes (that was the reason she always kept the same earrings, anyway). So I suspect if you look at her hair in season 2, that's her natural colour. As I said, she hates her hair so she inevitably goes back to dying and styling it when she gets a moment, but she was so exhausted and battered doing TNA I don't imagine she felt like doing anything to it!

Who wants to go back in time with Joanna ?

Oh, I noticed she wore those earrings through the both series. Good choice though: easy wearing, and very Purdey-ish. I noticed various times that she doesn't like her hair, although I still can't see why...
