Non-English (New) Avengers articles: the translations

Timeless-A-Peel, a lovely member of the Avengers Forum, gave me some scans to a few articles about The New Avengers, from Dutch tv guide's from the 70's. I offered to translate them, so far I've done one, it's this one:
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r192 ... 0009-8.jpg
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r192 ... 0010-8.jpg

And here it is:

The Avengers talk about their love lifes

The 3rd series of The Avengers has got us already glued to our television sets. In Canada, Gambit, Purdey and Steed have already started the next one. It can’t get better than this. They’re definitely 3 people to envy. Or so it seems in the television series. But how about in reality? Are Joanna Lumley, Gareth Hunt and Patrick Macnee just as enviable in their private lives?
All 3 of them have been married, and all their marriages failed. At this moment they’re all unmarried. For Patrick Macnee (Steed) it’s the hardest. It’s hard to imagine. In The Avengers he’s the handsome, successful, bowler hat wearing man who drives around in a Bentley and is always surrounded by beautiful women. In reality he’s a bit of a sad 55 year old man. Disappointed, insecure and he needed some psychiatric treatment to get back on track. His 2 marriages failed miserably. And he still doesn’t regret it.
I haven’t had sex in years, reveals Patrick Macnee. When you reach 50, the flame stops burning. It’s no longer a necessity to get into every girl’s bed. Life get’s easier. If I would try to get involved with young girls now, it would be ridiculous, humiliating and shameful.
Every now and then, Patrick gets extremely lonely. Nowadays he lives in Palm Springs, United States, with his daughter Jenny. The actor has done everything within his power to help her get over her severe asthma. She and brother Rupert are from his first marriage to Barbara Douglas. He feels that the divorce has been the cause of her asthma.
Luckily they live next door to one of the private doctors of the late president Kennedy, so Jenny’s in good hands.
The reason why Patrick won’t marry again after 2 failed marriages?
I’m only attracted to 1 type of women, he says. I could’ve had an affair with Diana Rigg, the actress from one of the previous series. She’s the spitting image of my first wife. Luckily I share a close friendship with her.
But marriage? No. Why marry the same kind of woman over and over again?
His only hearts desire is grandchildren. Perhaps I can fill the void in my life with that.
At the moment his children are both unmarried, so Patrick will just have to be patient.

Talking during the wedding night

Gareth Hunt (Gambit) is 34 years old and has been living together with Carrie for nearly 4 years. He lives in Putney, and he’s very content with that. I don’t think marriage would work for me at the moment, Gareth says. I have the wrong kind of job for that, and to be honest, me and Carrie just don’t feel like it.
I married for the first time when I’d just returned from the sea. I went there when I was 15.
We didn’t have money to pay for a honeymoon. After the wedding we immediately went back to our rented room. I can remember clearly how my landlord kept me awake by talking to me for half the night, during my wedding night, with stories about his many experiences during the war. Carol must’ve already had bad feelings about our marriage back then. They had a son together, but when Gareth suddenly decided to get a theatrical education, the marriage ended. Gareth says: we don’t hate each other, we’ve never let it get that far. We’re still on good terms.
Women aren’t Gareth’s biggest fear. It’s the men that scare him. I often run into these tough guys, who don’t see me as Gareth the actor, but as Gambit the super hero. They challenge me to a fight. And when that happens, I’m in trouble. It happened to him during a promotional trip to Paris. He was brought to a stand still by a 60 year old man. This guy put a gun in my hands that went of next to my ear. It really hurt. After that he took the gun away and decided to beat me up as well. Onlookers thought it was fantastic. They were applauding, because Gambit was loosing.
So what does he think of the gorgeous Purdey?
There’s something about her that appeals to me, but I consider her just a friend.
Purdey herself is completely smitten with one Michael Kitchen. Once she was married to Jeremy Lloyd for about 8 months. But it was all just a big joke.
We must’ve been completely out of our minds, says Joanna Lumley. We were both working on the same film, we’d known each other for 3 weeks, and we went off to get married. Directly after finishing the film, he had to go to America, to finish some other work there. Of the 8 months of marriage, we probably only spend about 4 of them together.
She’s now fallen for this Mr. Kitchen, but 30 year old, long legged Joanna doesn’t really feel like tying the knot. We’re just living together and having a great time!
I don’t see why signing a piece of paper should make any difference in a relationship. But if he’d ask me, I’d do it.
If he would say: let’s do this when we’re 60, I’d wait, because I’d still be with him then. I love him more than I love life itself.
Love is something different than just being friendly. Love makes your heart beat faster and makes you go weak in the knees whenever you see him. And that’s exactly how I feel about Michael.
She’s had a fling with Rod Stewart for a while. His fast and exciting way of life appealed to her, but in the end it wasn’t to be.
I’ve been hurt by men many times over, she says. But I’ve got the fastest healing heart in show business. I’ll sit and cry for 2 hours and I’ll feel really awful, and after that it’s over.
In the papers, there’s a discussion going on whether Purdey’s sexy enough. She’s already overcome all the excitement about it.
She knows exactly what she will and won’t do.
If a director would ask me to undress and jump into a swimming pool naked, I’d do it. But if he’d ask me to hang my panties on the back of the bed and make love to a man, the answer is NO!
I do whatever I want with the people I love. I’m not prepared to share it with 15 million others.
Let her have the intimacy of a love and don’t bother her with marriage proposals. It drives me crazy, Joanna says. I think I’ll make myself a sticker with ‘I’m never getting married again’ written on it. Perhaps that’ll help…

Re: Dutch New Avengers articles: The Translations

I read the Dutch version obviously, (your translations are great btw!) interesting! I think this was actually the first time I read something about her first marriage, something I can truly understand cos it is - of course - private business, but I'm surpised anyway.

I guess she changed pretty much ever since, and I'm glad she didn't really come to create such a sticker! (poor Stephen Barlow, haha)

Re: Dutch New Avengers articles: The Translations

I completely forgot to translate the 2nd article that Timeless had uploaded scans of, so with a bit of a delay, here it is as promised

This season, The Avengers are back on the television screen of the KRO. Last year, John Steed, Purdey and Gambit attracted an average of 5.480.000 viewers each week. The first episode of the new series will be shown on Thursday, September 29 at 8.25 pm on Nederland 2 and after that The New Avengers will be shown on Monday evening, like it was before.
At the moment, new episodes of the New Avengers are being filmed in Canada. Studio went over there to take a look, and the results of that visit will be shown to you in the coming months. But first a flashback of The Avengers, from 1960 to 1977.

It all started in 1960. Patrick Macnee returned to England after a few years of acting and having the odd job doing the washing up in America. Producer Sydney Newman was busy with the preparations of The Avengers, and thought that Patrick was the right man for the job. And Macnee agreed to do it, on one condition: that he didn’t have to grow a moustache, as written in the script.
His partner from 1960 to 1963 became Honor Blackman as Cathy Gale, often dressed in boots and a leather cat suit. After 3 years in The Avengers, she accepted a role in the James Bond film ‘Goldfinger’, and can still be seen in many films nowadays.
After a 2 year break, they found Honor’s replacement in Diana Rigg, who played Emma Peel from 1965 to 1967. An attractive, active Avenger. Many people still consider the Emma Peel days as the Golden Era of The Avengers.
After 2 years, Diana decided to leave. “I learned a lot, but I’m also very happy to have been released from this role”.
After that she also starred in a Bond film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, and returned to the theatre.
The third Avenger was Linda Thorson, who played the somewhat naïve and innocent Tara King. But after a 150 episodes the very successful series ended. The English were afraid to continue, because of financial risks.
Last year, after a seven year break, new plans for The Avengers could finally be made real thanks to financial support from the French. This time, Steed would have 2 partners: Gareth Hunt (an ex-formula 1 driver) as Mike Gambit and Joanna Lumley as the beautiful Purdey.
She was picked out of 300 candidates to play the role of Purdey, after having been a top model, and an actress in small roles like in Coronation Street and Are You Being Served?
And of course there’s the man who survived all the ups and downs and played the main character for all those years: gentleman John Steed with his bowler and brolly. He’s being played by the now 55 year old Patrick Macnee, a man who just like his character John Steed, likes a glass of wine and some luxury. “I have a feeling that The Avengers is practically a satire of my own background: Eton college, hunting, shooting, fishing”
A man who’s very proud of his last name, not Mcnee or MacNee, but Macnee, a small and very old Scottish family.
So what’s the secret behind the success of The Avengers?
It’s a very well made tv series with original, exciting, and sometimes almost science-fiction like storylines. There’s a lot of action, and all 3 actors are responsible for their own running, jumping and shooting.
Even Purdey doesn’t need a stunt double for her judo kicks, which they did have for the Emma Peel character. Despite the amount of action, the trio always emerge in the finest, and most modern outfits.
And of course, that amazing sense of humour, to come up with the most dry and funny remarks in times of trouble, almost as if they were pushing their luck.
These same New Avengers can be seen on your television screens, starting Thursday night.
In the first episode, a Chinese drug baron, tries to lure the trio into a trap and kill them.
After a lot of exciting moments, Steed, Purdey and Gambit manage to get out of it and save the day, but only just..

I can't find the scans that go with this article at the moment, the links are somewhere on The Avengers forum. I'll have a look later.

I'm sorry if some of the sentences are badly constructed, but I'm really tired at the moment and my brain isn't working properly.
There were also a few incorrect facts, but I decided to translate them as they were written, instead of correcting them.

Re: Dutch new Avengers articles: the translations

Philippa dear, I just received another Dutch TNA magazine today, and I was wondering if you'd be willing to translate the article again? It's a very short one, but it seems interesting. I ran it through a translator, but it just doesn't do it justice. It's got a lovely cover photo as well, and the article itself seems wonderfully saucy. Can you help? ^^

Thanks! That's awesome! The cover of the article is here (the coverline's pretty easy to figure out. "Sex" seems to be pretty much the same in any language  ). The actual article is here.

You and Maartje get to read it first, though. The Dutch must have really loved TNA, because this is the first time I've come across a non-fanzine article speculating so much on the characters.

Oh, and the cover's gorgeous, don't you think?

Extremely gorgeous cover

And it's only a short article, which is good for my brains at the moment, since everything's still a bit fuzzy
I'll try to translate it tonight or tomorrow.

And I agree it's extraordinary how much Dutch stuff there is about TNA! It must've been really popular back then. Because nowadays you hear nothing about anything TNA related in The Netherlands, and hardly anyone I know has heard of Joanna!

I just love the cover! Gareth's particularly gorgeous on it, but the whole pose and the way Joanna's looking at him...lovely.

And yes, it's only a short article. So don't stress! I know what it's like to be fuzzy and sick.

TNA seemed to have been huge with the Dutch--wasn't that where Joanna said 4 out of 5 people had Purdey bobs? So it must've had a huge chunk of popularity back in the seventies. Funny no one from around that time remembers it. You'd think it would have made an impression on some of the kids that were young then.

Oh wow, just looked it up. TNA actually premiered in the Netherlands 2 whole weeks before it did in Britain! Yep, you guys saw it first! That and the fact that the Emma episodes were hugely successful probably explains TNA's popularity. The press devoted a lot of coverage to it, as we've noticed.

Read more about it here:

Oh, that's interesting! We've always been pretty fond of the Avengers I think, many of us grew up with Emma and Tara, and later on Purdey. My parents actually recognised some of the Peel ones, and I actually quite enjoy (re)watching those with my mum, haha.

It seems to have been big from what I've read, I agree. Lucky you, like I said!

I found two small black and white pictures in the TV guide section of the magazine, too, so I'll post those later. One of Joanna, and one of Gareth and Joanna, both of which I've never seen before.

Yeah my parents too, especially my dad, remember TNA. They were a bit young for the original Avengers (born in '62 and '63), but I believe my dad does remember seeing some of the episodes.

Just little black and white pictures, but very clear. I'll scan them in a minute.

My mom was a bit young for the Avengers, too, and I think she missed TNA as well (she did have a Purdey bob, though she saw it in a magazine with nothing to do with TNA. Shows how big it got!) My dad remembers the original, though, and a few other shows from the time, The Persuaders and Fireball XL-5. My mom was more into The Partridge Family, and David Cassidy, which is why she's since gotten me addicted.

I actually like the longer hair better--I think Joanna looks better with it. And it is girlier. But the bob was more suited to the no-nonsense aspect of the character.

Wow , those scans shure bring back memories !
Me and my sis used to buy Joepie each week .
We took out the posters we want and cut out all the interesting articles to put in our scrapbook .
I mostly cut stuff out from Kim Wilde , Blondie , Dolly Dots or LUV !
My room was one big shrine to those girls ... lol
I couldn't help it - I was a teenager and my hormones were on a rampage ...
Too bad we lost all that stuff over the years ...

Haha, aw, Eric, LUV? What were you thinking? Blondie's great though, Debbie is most certainly (still) an icon.

Anyway to get back on topic: I seem to be the only one 'round here whose parents still remember the Avengers, haha. It's odd though, because my mum lately told me that she was too old for TNA in the seventies, so she only remembers Diana Rigg actually.
