Little musings on Joanna

Here's a small bit from an article on Nadine Garner, who played - of course - Gloria (''the Australian'') in Class Act:

In 2007, with my son, Edan, I caught up with Joanna Lumley at her London home. I'd worked with her in 1993 and 1994 on the comedy series Class Act. I've made a point of keeping in touch. She's poised, funny and the most compassionate, intelligent being I've ever met. She's made such an impression on me on how to treat people and present oneself professionally.

I just thought I share this, because it decribes Joanna in such a loving way.

Hm, I think I found it in the Joanna Lumley thread on the Jennifer Saunders forum. A member over there runs a Nadine fan page which is rather lovely.

Oh that's so cool. I'll pop over to the Jen forum to look for it.

Oh, that's great to hear from Nadine--I love Class Act, but it never gets mentions in the press. It's great that Joanna and Nadine have stayed in touch--and Nadine's got a kid now! :squee: I have visions of them hooking up with John Bowe and getting a bit tipsy over lunch--just like old times.

Re: Little musings on Joanna

It's sweet, isn't it? Joanna is probably right saying that friendships in the acting business usually don't last very long, but it's rather lovely to see that she did manage to stay in touch with some of the people she has worked with over the years, like Nadine, Gareth and Jennifer.

I wonder if she has kept in touch with Patrick.
Does she receive news from him, from time to time ?

She used to keep in touch with him at least. I don't know that he's in contact with anyone anymore. He's very old now, and his wife died a year or two back. I never heard anything from him when Gareth died, so I think he's off the radar now as far as his Avengers costars, and most others, are concerned. Gareth and Joanna went out for his birthday together, though, so they stayed very close until his death.

I'm blue now, Mr Macnee is very old...
Hope he'll live longer, if he could reach 100's, it would be great, my avenging spirit can't work without Mr Steed.

Gareth - of course - died way too young, but otherwise it's great all of the ex-Avengers are still living. Especially Patrick and Honor have reached an impressive age by now: Joanna's a young one compared to them! I'd be rather sad if either one of them died though...

My grandmother has the same age than Honor's. ^^
Hope it will bring hope.

All except Ian Hendry, of course. The men never seem to fare as well on average as the women. Patrick Newell, who played mother, also passed away several years ago. Both Gareth and Ian went far too young, I agree. :crybaby:

Long life runs in Patrick's family, though. His mother lived a very long time, so Patrick could still be with us for many years.

I've got a magazine at home with an interview of Patrick Newell, made in 1989, a few months before his death.
Mother's death was hard to accept when I heard about it.

About Patrick Macnee, I wonder if he would be able to visit the UK one day, for the new collection's promo.

I doubt Patrick will ever return to Britain. Sadly, I think he's much too old to travel such a long distance.

I'd be interested to read the Newell interview, though.

Re: Little musings on Joanna

The Newell interview comes from this French magazine about TV Series [ Génération Séries] -or at least, it was a magazine, I haven't heard about it for a while now.
The article was published and reprinted for a second edition, in 1995.

I'll translate it for you.

The document is perfectly illustrated with pictures from YOU'LL CATCH YOUR DEATH (When Steed and Tara visit Mother and discover about the strange epidemic) and PANDORA (Picture from the tag at the end, with Tara's Gift for Steed ! :lmao: ).

Re: Little musings on Joanna

This is the sweetest quote I've read in a very long time:

“I’m immensely proud of what’s she’s done,” says Saunders, who worked alongside Lumley on Absolutely Fabulous. “She ran the perfect campaign. I’ve always known Jo is an incredibly strong and determined person. She feels so passionately about this issue, I thought, ‘She’ll never let this go.’ Some of her roles belie quite how bright she is – she can run rings round people with one gentle smile!”

(from an interview with Jennifer Saunders, published on the Telegraph website)

To read such genuine words from a close friend is really beautiful - it almost brought tears to my eyes actually.

The rest of the interview is also really nice: I've posted it in the Jennifer section.

All the praising words from the media are nice of course, but such loving words from a co-star and friend are just beautiful. I can't get over how sweet I actually find this...

Re: Little musings on Joanna

I found this comment on Youtube, and I think it's so cute:

''CLASSY'' is soo sooo attractive in a woman. A woman with class stands out in a room. ...i'm 19 and even I can appreciate a classy girl. shame there's none left these days.

How true! I think this is probably why I admire her so much, us girls need someone to look up! It's jus so sad that the only idols young women seem to have nowadays are people like Gaga...
