Songs relating to Purdey and Gambit

Since we've become masters in finding Purdey and Gambit references in nearly every song (and every Killers song possible  ), I thought it would be time for a special thread dedicated to this.
Of course there's When You Were Young which by now is our Purdey/Gambit anthem. But all of a sudden another song sprang to mind:
Come What May from the movie Moulin Rouge. The lyrics are just perfect

Never knew I could feel like this
Like I've never seen the sky before
Want to vanish inside your kiss
Every day I love you more and more
Listen to my heart, can you hear it sings
Telling me to give you everything
Seasons may change, winter to spring
But I love you until the end of time

Come what may
Come what may
I will love you until my dying day

Suddenly the world seems such a perfect place
Suddenly it moves with such a perfect grace
Suddenly my life doesn't seem such a waste
It all revolves around you
And there's no mountain too high
No river too wide
Sing out this song and I'll be there by your side
Storm clouds may gather
And storms may collide
But I love you until the end of time

Come what may
Come what may
I will love you until my dying day

Oh, come what may, come what may
I will love you, I will love you
Suddenly the world seems such a perfect place

Come what may
Come what may
I will love you until my dying day

Isn't it just perfect?

Re: Songs relating to Purdey and Gambit

Haha, nice one darling! Since you've already added WYWY, I'll go for Mr. Brightside which is - of course - totally about Gambit.

I'm coming out of my cage
And I've been doing just fine
Gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss
Now I'm falling asleep
And she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
But she's touching his-chest
Now, he takes off her dress
Now, letting me go

And I just can't look its killing me
And taking control
Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibis
But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
'Cause I'm Mr Brightside

I'm coming out of my cage
And I've been doing just fine
Gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss
Now I'm falling asleep
And she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
But she's touching his-chest
Now, he takes off her dress
Now, letting me go

Did I ever mention I love the Killers? :lolol:

Re: Songs relating to Purdey and Gambit

Oh, what a great idea for a topic! Of course, I can see Purdey and Gambit everywhere, but there are some songs that fit more than others. For me, "Walking Behind" by the Moffatts sums Purdey and Gambit's relationship up perfectly.

She's running
And he's walking behind
He's trying
But he's last in her line
His love's dying but he keeps on tryin
He lives in fear with a love that's clear
(he's walking behind)
He's got love that he needs to give but she's afraid to let him in

[CHORUS]
To her world with no together
She can't see him in her picture
She wants love but her heart won't let her let him in
He's walking behind
He's walking behind

The phone's ringin
Is it her on the line?
Does he answer
Or is he wasting his time?
Her loves dying but she keeps on trying
She lives in fear of a love that's clear
(She's walking behind)
She's got love that she needs to give but he's afraid to let her in

[CHORUS]
To his world with no together
He can't see her in his picture
He wants love but his heart won't let him let her in
She's walkin behind
Yeah

They've got a love to give
But they're afraid to let it in
She's got a love to give
And he's got a love to give
So let em in
Yeah

In a world with no together
She can't see him in her picture
She wants love so let him in
To his world with no together
He can't see her in his picture
He wants love but his heart won't let him let her in

He's walking behind
She's walking behind

He's walking behind. Does that scream Purdey and Gambit or what?

Re: Songs relating to Purdey and Gambit

And I just have to post another one. I made my first Purdey/Gambit video to "Something to Talk About" by Badly Drawn Boy. Take a look at the lyrics and you'll see why:

I've been dreaming
Of the things I've learnt
About a boy who's bleeding
celebrate to elevate
The joy is not the same without the pain
Oooh

Ipso facto
Using up your oxygen
You know I'm shallow
Calling out for extra help
You've got to let me in
Or let me out

Oooh something to talk about
Oooh something to talk about
Oooh Oooh Oooh

I've been dreaming
Of the things I learnt
About a boy who's leaving
Nothing else to chance again
You've got to let me in
Or let me out
Oooh something to talk about
Yeah something to talk about
Oooh Oooh Oooh

Particularly the bits about Purdey having to decide to let Gambit in or let him go. She can't keep him in limbo forever. It's a great song.

That's an old video, now, but I had that song in my head for a Purdey/Gambit video for so long before I made it. It's pretty much the reason I started making videos. I should do another one of these days. I've just been so busy writing fic.

I'm glad you guys liked it, though. I really think the song worked for it. Some of the lines (I've been dreaming all the things I learned about a boy) could go with Purdey, but the let me in/out bits are more Gambit. So it's like a little dialogue.

You're the Cream in my Coffee:

You’re the cream in my coffee,
You’re the salt in my stew
You will always be my necessity,
I'd be lost without you.

You’re the starch in my collar,
You’re the lace in my shoe
You will always be my necessity,
I'd be lost without you.

I think I've found another one, a song by - suprise suprise - the Killers.

The Ballad Of Michael Valentine (now, just replace that last name...)
With your new suit, and your black tie
Hold on, you're just a gambling man, all proper like
I broke to the right and I caught your eye

The ''gambling'' does it for me. :d

It seems that way, doesn't it? Brandon created a whole TNA soundtrack without even trying.

Another song that makes me think Purdey and Gambit is "I Can Feel Your Heartbeat" by David Cassidy. It's even from the seventies! Lovely song, with lots of seventies guitar touches. Just look at the lyrics and tell me I'm wrong:

I can feel your heartbeat and you didn't even say a word
I can feel your heartbeat and you didn't even say a word
Oh, I know, pretty woman that your love can be heard

You can feel my heartbeat, too
I can tell you're feelin' me
You can feel my heartbeat, too
I can see you feelin' me
Oh, I know, pretty woman that your love can be heard
Oh...

We paint the night, let it shine in the light of our love
This is the night...yeah, this is the night of our love
I'll treat you like a woman, love you like a woman
Lord, I'll prove it baby, I'm a man of my word

Love, love...can'tcha feel your heartbeat
Love, love...I can feel your heartbeat
Love, love...can'tcha feel your heartbeat, love!

Love, love...can'tcha feel my heartbeat
Love, love...I can feel your heartbeat
Love, love...can'tcha feel your heartbeat
Love, love...I can feel your heartbeat
Love, love...can'tcha feel it?
Love, love...I can feel it!
Love, love...gettin' stronger!
Love, love...Oh, I can feel it!
Love, love...I can feel it!
Love, love...It's gettin' stronger...
Love!

Re: Songs relating to Purdey and Gambit

I was listening to one of my Scissor Sisters' albums, and I realised that one song that reminds me of Purdey and Gambit so much is their "Mary." If you substitute "Mary" for "Purdey," it could easily be Gambit talking. Read the whole set of lyrics, and you'll see why.

I love the tone that's in your laugh
Gasping for an extra breath
Waiting for the time to pass
I believe in days ahead
Don't spend another night alone
Cross and wishing you were dead.

Mary, you shouldn't let them make you mad
You hold the best you can
And Mary, after all the pain is gone
I'm always gonna live to be your man.

I've had it easy now you see
When I'm down you're always there
Standing by to comfort me
Someday we'll go round the world
I'll make the journey so sublime
I know you're not a travelin' girl.

Mary, you shouldn't let 'em make you mad
You hold the best you can
And Mary, after all the pain is gone
I'm always gonna live to be your man.

Cause I'd give everything I have
Forget all the things that bring me joy
If you could have one day
Pure and simple happiness
Until that moment comes
I'll be here where I've always been
I'm gonna be your friend
Until the day I die.

Mary, you shouldn't let 'em make you mad
You hold the best you can
And Mary, after all the pain is gone
I'm always gonna live to be your man.

(hold on....)

Isn't it just? I love the Scissor Sisters--they can be so cheeky and funny one minute, and so incredibly sweet the next. It just makes you melt. When they sing:

Mary, you shouldn't let them make you mad
You hold the best you can
And Mary, after all the pain is gone
I'm always gonna live to be your man.

it just fits so perfectly. They have another one that I think fits, too, and sounds like Gambit: "Might Tell You Tonight":

When you're quiet, but your eyes
Are saying everything I need to know
I want to burrow like a sparrow
Dodging alley cats and whiskers
Why do we talk in whispers?
Is it painful hearing voices ring
So early in the morning?

I've been waiting for the day
When I can throw away these numbers
That line my dresser drawers and cupboards
Start me over
Life seems so much slower
With your toothbrush by the mirror
Can I make it any clearer?

And I just might say it tonight
I just might say it tonight
I just might tell you tonight
That I love you
And you should stay all my life

They'll tell you that you'll maybe make it
If you just cut your clothes and change your hair
But I won't fuss and moan
'bout what you wear
I feel so much better
When I read your dirty letters
Just wear your sweaters in the winter
'Cause I wonuldn't want you to get cold
I hope that we're togethre when we're old
I would have sold all my possessions
Never took piano lessons
But baby you're a grand
And I will learn to play the good notes
And tune you up the best I can

And I just might say it tonight
I just might say it tonight
I just might tell you tonight
That I love you
And you should stay all my life

I love the Sisters. I can't wait for their new album.

And yes, go for "I Can Feel Your Heartbeat," too. David Cassidy's voice is just so beautiful, and most of his songs (not this one) are really sweet and light and innocent. But "Heartbeat" is still my favourite.

Re: Songs relating to Purdey and Gambit

I'd forgotten all about this one, but this song has reminded me of Purdey and Gambit for ages. "Love You Lately" by Daniel Powter. It sounds very post-Obsession, when Purdey and Gambit are trying to get their relationship back on track:

You packed your last two bags.
A taxi's 'round the bend.
You used to laugh out loud,
But you can't remember when.
You lost your lies.
It's like your moving out of time,
And the whole word
crumbles right beneath you.

So, I might've made a few mistakes,
But that was back when you would smile,
And we would go everywhere,
But we ain't been there for awhile.
And this I know,
There's a place that we can go-
A place where I can finally let you know.

'Cause I'm the one that loves you lately.
You and me, we got this great thing.
We're the only one's that around,
We're the only one's that around this Babylon.

I hope you find
whatever you've been lookin' for.
Just remember where you're from
and who you are,
'Cause there's a thousand lights
that'll make you feel brand new,
But if you ever lose your way,
I'll leave one on for you.

'Cause I'm the one that loves you lately.
You and me, we got this great thing.
So, come back and you sit down. Relax.
Everything's to see
that you've come a long, long way,
And it's the place that you should be.

'Cause I'm the one that loves you lately.
You and me, we got this great thing.
'Cause I'm the one that loves you lately.
You and me, we got this great thing.
And we're the only one's that around,
We're the only one's that around this Babylon

Re: Songs relating to Purdey and Gambit

One fairly new song that always reminds me of the two is Crossfire, and I'm fairly sure Timeless will agree. Another touch of that Killers/Avengers magic!

There’s a still in the street outside your window
You’re keepin’ secrets on your pillow
Let me inside, no cause for alarm
I promise tonight not to do no harm
I promise you baby,I won't be no harm

And we're caught up in the crossfire
A heaven and hell
And were searching for shelter
Lay your body down...

Watching your dress as you turn down the light
I forget all about the storm outside
Dark clouds roll their way over town
Heartache and pain came pouring down like
Chaos in the rain, yeah
They're handing it out

And we're caught up in the crossfire
Heaven and hell
And were searching for shelter
Lay your body down...

Tell the devil that he can go back from where he came
His fire he airs all through their beating vein.
And when the hardest part is over we'll be here
And our dreams will break the boundaries of our fears
Boundaries of our fears

Oh, yes, I'd started making connections after the first listen. It's incredibly evocative of the Purdey/Gambit relationship and how it collides with the demands of the job. I can actually picture them in a hotel room, quiet and sombre, trying to work their way through the aftermath of their last assignment. Lots of moody mental imagery. Another hit from Brandon.

It really is amazing how many Killers songs seem to slot into the TNA/Purdey and Gambit mould. If there was a modern day TNA, I'd have him doing pieces for critical story bits left, right, and centre. He's somehow managed to tap both the show and Purdey and Gambit's relationship's slight melancholy, and the underlying grit of the series and their job. It's really not hard to see why I wrote "Berlin" to Sam's Town half the time. No, Brandon really has it. I hope we'll find more like that on his album. And maybe we'll have to send him back to 1976 and have him help Laurie out, eh?

(And why oh why are they wasting them on the Twilight movies? Come on, guys. Where's the James Bond theme? I want to hear Brandon warbling about another secret agent. )

Oh, absolutely. You know, part of me wishes they would do a really good remake of this series, set in the here and now. With the right casting and writers, it could be fantastic. Perhaps they could even get Matthew Graham in - no doubt he knows all about the seventies!

And as for the soundtrack... The Killers, I don't think I will ever stop listening to them because I keep discovering new things in their music every time I give their songs a good go.

Whenever anyone ever brings up the topic of "How would you do an Avengers remake?" I always bring up Matthew Graham, Ashley Pharoh, Tony Jordan, and the whole lot at Kudos. They'd be my first choice to helm something like that. They know the period, as you say, but they've also handled glossy stuff like Hustle which is always how I imagine the Avengers would look in the modern day. I don't know how I'd work with someone else playing Purdey and Gambit (assuming they didn't just create new characters), but I think their hands would be the safest, no question. They could bring Laurie back for incidental music, Brandon for special tracks, and Brian Clemens could be involved in an advisory capacity. They could do little promos for each of the characters ("The Ballad of Michael Valentine" for Gambit, of course. You've totally sold me on the link there. :thumb: )There, we're all set.

The Killers really are an amazing band (though I admit I love the Scissor Sisters a smidge more). I think they're sorely underrated, but I'm glad they haven't tried to change their sound to compensate for that. They really do put out a great range of stuff, from reflective and vulnerable to harsh and visceral. There's a reason I can't wait for Flamingo this September. ^^

Re: Songs relating to Purdey and Gambit

Proving that we're long overdue for a new Killers album, the Arctic Monkeys have started taking over Brandon's post as offical TNA composer. I bought their latest album, and the title track "Suck It and See" just screams Purdey and Gambit to me. I've been playing it loads, and I think of them every time. Read on and see if you agree... ^^

Your love is like a studded leather headlock
Your kiss, it could put creases in the rain
You're rarer than a can of dandelion and burdock
And those other girls are just postmix lemonade

Suck it and see, you never know
Sit next to me before I go
Jigsaw women with horror movie shoes
Be cruel to me 'cause I'm a fool for you

I poured my aching heart into a pop song
I couldn't get the hang of poetry
That's not a skirt, girl, that's a sawn off shotgun
And I can only hope you've got it aimed at me

Suck it and see, you never know
Sit next to me before I go
Jigsaw women with horror movie shoes
Be cruel to me 'cause I'm a fool for

Oo, blue moon girls from once upon a Shangri-La
How I often wonder where you are
You have got that face that just says
Baby, I was made to break your heart, oh

Suck it and see, you never know
Sit next to me before I go
Go, go
Go, go
Jigsaw (go) women with horror movie (go) shoes
Be cruel to me 'cause I'm a fool for you
