Did Honor smoke? I know she smoked in The Avengers, but I always had the feeling that she was the most healthy of the Avenger women.
I was under the impression she didn't smoke in real life.

She smoked outside the series and she even faced a terrible cancer at a certain period of her life.
Fortunately, it's over now, she's healthy again.

Yes but she had breastcancer a few years ago, she didn't have cancer due to smoking.

Well, I'd just read that, I didn't know it wasn't due to smoking, anyway it was a breaking piece of news, I turned white when I heard about it.

That's shocking, and I didn't know that about her to be honest. I'm glad she's healthy again now, but it really is the most horrible disease, isn't it?

Like a chimney. Honor's actually the only Avengers girl who actually is showing signs of smoking while she was on the show--her skin was already showing signs of it. I don't know that she does now, but her voice is huskier as well. All the Avengers actors smoked, to a greater or less degree, at one time or another--Patrick, Ian, Honor, Diana, Linda, Joanna, and Gareth. Patrick quit outright. Diana passed it on to her daughter. Gareth I think was intermittent. Joanna is probably lighter than Diana. Honor and Linda, I don't know if they're still at it. Ian Hendry pretty much smoked and drank himself to death, sadly.

Tragic story for Hendry...
Even though she smoked, Honor still embodied the modern woman, I like seeing Cathy smoking, it adds something mature, elegant.
It's a matter of opinion in fact.

Well, Cathy was the only Avengers girl to ever smoke onscreen, in the days when Steed, Venus, and Dr. Keel did, too. By the time they hit Emma, smoking was obviously much more taboo, since Steed quit and Emma was never shown lighting up, nor Tara. And like I said, by Purdey and Gambit's time, there were lines like "I don't smoke myself, but I keep [cigarettes] for those who foolishly do." That and "wear your seatbelt when engaging in high-speed chases" were TNA's public safety announcements. It's okay to jump out of windows and drink all the time, though.

Haha, did they really write that kind of lines in? I never noticed to be honest. You're right about the smoking though - if it was really seen as a crime, how about the whiskey and lime? (sorry - couldn't help myself...) There was a lot of drinking going on on the set, from whiskey to champagne, and I don't think they could come away with it nowadays, but back then, I must say watching Emma and Steed nipping their glasses, had a rather posh effect, haha.

In an interview, Patrick reveals when he watches the series, some episodes he's disgusted to see him drinking.

Watch K is for Kill part 2, when Steed gets saved by his cigarette case. "I don't smoke myself, but I keep it for friends that foolishly do." Then watch Last of the Cybernuats and watch the nice long scene where Purdey and Gambit put their seatbelts on before engaging in a high-speed car chase. We call them TNA PSA's--they're famous!

Whiskey and lime...

All the alcohol was fake, of course, unlike the cigarettes--fizzy lemonade subbed in for champagne. Otherwise, if they did multiple takes, all the stars would be sloshed, and while that would make for entertaining TV, it wouldn't do much for the shooting schedule. Just imagine, Gareth and Joanna passed out behind the sofa at Steed's.

Because Patrick really declared that in the interview, that seeing him drinking alcohol made him sick.

Perhaps it was during the first series.

It was fake because you couldn't have the stars drunk on set when you had to do two, three, four takes of a scene with them drinking each time--by the end they wouldn't be able to do the lines. I think Patrick meant just seeing himself looking like he was drinking alcohol made him uncomfortable because the mere idea of it made him cringe. He swore off drinking and smoking eventually, and now any reminder of it probably makes him uncomfortable. Patrick's frequently inaccurate about that sort of thing anyway (he claimed he never carried a gun, which is, of course, totally false).

Yep, it's very innacurate what he says, still hidden secrets.
