Well, because I won't be working on it any time soon, I might as well post the few scraps I have of my LoM/TNA crossover. The title "In Custody" is a working one, and I'll warn you there are lots of scraps of dialogue and scenes that are just sitting there on their own, written so I wouldn't forget them. It won't make a lot of sense--what little of the plot there is there isn't terribly informative. ***= a scene break. ... means that those lines are all part of the same scene, but should have something in between them that hasn't been written.

Anyway, treat them as fun little extras until the next "proper" story is posted:

It's the linking on this forum--it cuts url's in half and them sends you to a default page. I think I've fixed it. Try now.

It still doesn't work
And I know, it's so annoying that the forum does that. I've been trying to do something about that for ages, but I still haven't figured out how to fix it.

Argh. It's because it's an old doc I'd already uploaded but I forgot to publish it (of course it came up for me when I tested it because I was logged in. Stuff like that makes me angry. )

It should work now. Bloody technology...

Ooh this was great! I really hope that you'll turn this into a full story, I want to know what's going to happen
I know that you normally only write for TNA, but you got the other characters spot on as well.

I really loved the "I'm a fan" bit. Really cool how you combined fiction and reality here!

Read some of it this morning (not finished, yet - had to unglue myself from the computer screen to go to work). Purdey - drunk? Aw, poor Gambit. And Steed. *lol* But I can SO see that!

You know, that scene reminds me of one of my favourite scenes from one of the Don Camillo movies. They're in Russia and Camillo's pretending to be one of the Italian "comrades" - not a priest. When someone needs a priest, though, Peppone agrees to provide a distraction (so no one notices Camillo's missing) by entering a drinking contest with the Russian mayor. Well, it does take Camillo longer than expected to finish his business ... *lol*

Timeless - you're confusing me! It must be me (I haven't seen LoM after all) as it seems to make perfect sense to everyone else, haha. Now, this I can handle:

Purdey and Gambit were fiction, relics from one of his favourite childhood series. Somewhere, in 2006, actors Gareth Hunt and Joanna Lumley were in their sixties and going about their lives. But here no such persons existed. Characters were eternal, unchanged by the ravages of time.

But Purdey, drunk? You're playing tricks with my mind, I know you are!

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I can see why it'd be confusing for Maartje, though--Life on Mars is confusing even when you've actually watched it.

I had loads of ideas for this. Larry Carrington is brain-drained Larry from The Three-Handed Game. Naturally, the story's set in 1976, and since Sam was born in 1969, I figured at age 7 he probably would have watched TNA. We also know he's still around in 1976, but he keeps getting premonitions, usually delivered by Purdey and Gambit in those surreal moments where people start talking straight "to" him, about water and passing on under it. Sam, so sure that he's got a handle on his sanity, starts to experience "episodes"--literally. When he goes home, he keeps finding Steed, Purdey, and Gambit on TV, talking about the assignment. Thing is, Sam's not the only one affected--Purdey and Gambit start acting a little strange, the idea being that there's something weird about Sam's version of Manchester. Oh, and I threw in the bit about Steed, Ronnie Vance, and Gene's brother Stu. Stu was a cocaine addict who died in 1963. Ronnie Vance was the head of a drug ring in the first Avengers episode, Hot Snow. Snow=cocaine. Dr. Keel's fiancee, Peggy, was killed because she could identify a member of the gang, and Steed teamed up with Keel to solve the murder (hence calling the show "The Avengers"). Because Steed worked a lot with the cops in season 1, I figured he could have known a young Gene, and promised to help him find his brother in exchange for Gene helping him out. Thing is, Steed got promoted and started working different cases with Cathy Gale, and the Stuart Hunt file was passed on to someone else, who didn't find Stu in time to stop him overdosing. Gene holds Steed responsible, and hates spies as a result. I had other ideas, too (including a Persuaders reference). Maybe one of these days I'll actually finish it. I'm glad the characters rang true, though--writing Gene, Ray, Chris, Sam, Annie, and Phyllis was really hard! Maybe if I did more I'd get better. They're totally different characters, and they necessitate a bit of swearing as well, I'm afraid.

I told you I had too many ideas!

I think it's really clever how you incorporated all these different elements into 1 storyline. I did get the whole reference about Dr. Keel, but your explanation here makes it a lot more clear. And with that you get the whole fiction vs. reality thing, because Sam remembers watching The New Avengers on television, and now the characters are "real" all of a sudden. That must do something to his poor, already confused enough mind

That was one of the first things I wanted to write--drunk Purdey! Because I thought there'd be some good comedy to be mined there. Anyone notice her story about lying drunk in a field in Innsbruck? She stole that from Douglas Adams, but he hadn't written Hitchhiker's yet, or talked about it. So how does she know? Oooh, spooky!

I was going to explain the whole Keel/Vance thing better later in the story, but I never got that far. But it's definitely meant to be a blending of fact and fiction, with poor Sam finding it harder and harder to draw a line between the two. My opinion is Sam/Alex's world actually does exist, and not just in their minds, but as some sort of alternate...I don't know. World? And in that world Purdey and Gambit are real people, and there never was a TNA or a Gareth or Joanna. There was going to be a bit where Sam tried to ask Ray and the other station members if they'd ever tuned in and seen TNA, or if Purdey and Gambit looked familiar, but they all just look at him funny, of course. It makes my mind go a bit to be honest, but it was a fun idea to blend the lines. Maybe one day I'll get back to it.

I really hope you do. It's a very interesting idea for a storyline, and you could take it in so many different directions! It's funny to play with the whole confused Sam idea, and like you said, the existing of... well let's call it a parallel universe. It's a great concept for a fic

It was a lot of fun to even do those bits, but they took a very, very long time because I had to start writing for a whole new set of characters (I'm pretty relaxed with Purdey and Gambit). There are so many things you can do with Sam's warped version of reality, definitely. Maybe when I go to do another AU (I'm just about finished one, so I want a break for them for a bit, particularly since my actual fic "Life on Mars" feels very AU in itself), I'll come back to it. Either that or I'll start on that Champions/TNA crossover I thought of.

Well, the Life on Mars crossover is just scraps--not a full story. Maybe one day I'll finish it, though. I have so many writing projects I want to do, and they're all lined up waiting for me to work on them. Really need to focus on the arc now, though.

The Champions is a cult British series that ran in the late sixties about three superpowered agents who work for Nemesis, a sort of UN-sanctioned spy agency. I've been watching a lot of ITV series, and I really love that one, and I think it would make great crossover material. Again, something else to work on. That's so weird you saw it on TV right after I mentioned it, though! That sort of stuff happens to me all the time. Did you give it a look? It's lots of fun--not terribly realistic, but fun. I love Stuart Damon as Craig in particular--he's hilarious.

Oh, yes, do give it a try. It's lots of fun. Particularly Craig, like I said (he's the American). It's funny because the fact that they have superpowers actually makes everything seem more realistic than a lot of other shows where they do things that no normal person should be able to do. If you do take a look, let me know what you think.

I'm sick, and therefore haven't been writing much (I have real problems writing when I'm sick). However, I just might poke at "In Custody" a bit today, and it occurred to me that it's going to take awhile before I finish it, or even work on it properly. So I've got new pages sitting on my harddrive unread. So I thought I'd put an offer out there--would you guys be interested in reading this fic "as it comes?" When it's finished I hope to put it on ff.net in the Life on Mars section, after I've had it betaed, but if you guys like you can "sneak preview" it, as long as you don't mind reading it in occasionally fragmented, unpolished pieces, and with the understanding that it may go through long periods of not being updated as I busy myself with other things. And you don't mind being spoilered. Just a thought. Let me know what you think.

Yeah, I hate being sick. It's hard to focus on much. But I'll try and upload some pages. The fic's nowhere near finished, but you can at least enjoy what I have.
